Saturday afternoon, for the first time since early December, the Malone University men's basketball team was on the road.

The Pioneers traveled to Hillsdale College for a matchup with the nationally ranked Chargers.

Hillsdale built up an eleven-point advantage in the first half, and was able to hold off Malone down the stretch for the 76-70 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) win.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Final Score: #11 Hillsdale College Chargers 76 - Malone University Pioneers 70
  • Records: Hillsdale (14-1, 7-1 G-MAC) | Malone (10-3, 5-2 G-MAC)
  • Location: Hillsdale, Michigan | Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena
THE GAME

The Hillsdale defense stifled Malone's offense during the first half.

The Chargers led by as many as twelve points, and it took until the 2:54 mark of the first half for the Pioneers to cross the 20-point threshold.

On the other end, the MU defense did a good job of their own to keep the Pioneers in the game.

All told, Malone trailed Hillsdale 33-22 at the halftime break.

The Pioneers came back out of the locker room hitting on all cylinders. A massive 15-3 run to open up the half gave Malone their first lead of the afternoon at 37-36 with 15:35 still to play in the ballgame.

10 of the 15 points in the run came via Bo Myers. The senior ultimately finished with 21 points on the day.

The lead traded hands several times during the second half.

After Hillsdale took a 43-41 lead, Malone responded with seven consecutive points, including five more from Myers, to take their largest lead of the game. With 12:36 left to play the Pioneers were on top 48-43.

Unfortunately the Chargers fought back, and reclaimed the lead midway through the second half.

The back-and-forth affair continued down the stretch, but ultimately Hillsdale was able to get a three-pointer inside the final two minutes to make it a two possession game.

The Chargers were also able to make 5 out of their last 6 free throw attempts inside the last minute to hang on for the 76-70 win.

  • Justin Miller, finished with a game-high 24 points. He continues to be the leading scorer in the G-MAC with a season average of 19.8 points per game.
  • The 21-point effort from Bo Myers pushed his season average up to 17.5 points per game. He currently sits second in the conference in scoring.
