The Mount Union women's basketball team fell on the road 79-64 to Oberlin Tuesday Night at Philips Gymnasium. The Purple Raiders (3-3) were led by freshman Mckayla Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central) who scored a team high 13 points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds.
Oberlin (5-2) was led by Alyson Jefferson with 21 points.
In the first quarter Mount Union got the first bucket from Dunkle but five straight points from Oberlin gave them the lead. Mount Union would tie the game up with a three from Cannon but another five straight points from Oberlin gave them a 10-5 lead. The Raiders once again tied the game this time with a three from sophomore Hailey Haywood () tied the game at 12. Oberlin scored the final six points of the quarter taking an 18-12 lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter began with back-and-forth buckets as Oberlin scored the first, but Dunkle came back with a layup to keep the lead within six. A 10-0 run by Oberlin pushed the lead out to 33-16. A free throw from freshman Bailey Shutsa (Wadsworth / Norton) and two from junior Myla Kline (Holland, N.Y. / Holland) put the score at 33-19 in favor of Oberlin. Oberlin outscored mount Union 8-6 in the final four minutes to take a 41-25 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter went the way of Oberlin as they outscored Mount Union 25-16 to push the lead out to 66-41. Mount Union finished the final quarter outscoring Oberlin 23-13 but it was not enough as they dropped the contest 79-64.
Mount Union will begin conference play on Saturday heading to Tiffin, Ohio to take on Heidelberg at 4 p.m.
