Raiders Split With Hiram

Mount Union's baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Hiram, winning game one 13-3 and losing game two 4-3 on Monday evening.

The Purple Raiders (20-15) finished with 15 hits in game one and had four players with multiple hits. Seniors Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) and Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa.) both went 3-of-4 in the game and had two and four RBIs respectively, with Weaver hitting a home run.

Mount Union would strike first in game one scoring two runs in the top of the second inning, the first coming off an RBI single from Weaver that brought home senior Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial). Then, sophomore Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) reached first on a fielder's choice and senior Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) scored on a throwing error by the Hiram shortstop to take a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders would add to their lead in the third inning scoring seven runs with RBIs coming from Marlowe, Stauffer, junior Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) and a three-run home run from Weaver.

The Terriers (14-22) would cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Kyle Workman hit an RBI double that brought home Curtis Caithaml to cut the lead to 9-1. Mount Union would add to their lead in the top half of the fourth inning, scoring three more runs. The first came off an RBI single from Stauffer that scored Marlowe, then Lehman hit a double to left center that brought home Stauffer and Weaver. The Raiders would score another run in the top of the fifth inning when Marlowe hit an RBI single that scored Mazza.

Hiram would cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs coming off a two RBI single from Kyle Adams that brought home Chaisson Marrs and Aidan Jantz, however the Raiders would go on to win 13-3.

Gallant got the start on the mound for Mount Union, giving up one run, zero earned on four hits and struck out four in five innings. Sophomore Chuck Hawley (Mentor) would come in to pitch one inning of relief giving up two runs on three hits and striking out one. Senior Cole Robinson (Lewis Center / Olentangy) would come in to pitch the final inning for the Raiders giving up zero runs on zero hits and striking out two.

The Raiders would strike first again in game two, scoring in the top of the third inning when Mazza hit an RBI double that brought home sophomore Joey Procop (Twinsburg) to take a 1-0 lead. The Terriers tied the game at one in the bottom half of the fourth when Workman hit an RBI single that scored Connor Bansek.

Mount Union would reclaim the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Mazza reached first on an error by the Hiram shortstop and Lehman scored. Hiram would take their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the inning when Evan Fairbanks hit a three-run home run and the Terriers would go on to take game two 4-3.

Senior Ryan Osman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon) got the start on the hill for the Raiders and gave up one run on six hits, while striking out four in five innings. Freshman Chris Phillips (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) came in to pitch the final inning for Mount Union giving up three runs on two hits and striking out two.

The Raiders are on the road again next travelling to New Concord, Ohio on Saturday, May 7 to take on Muskingum in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, with game one beginning at 1 p.m. and game two following at 4 p.m.
