Class of 2022 Names Carrilyn Long Mentor of the Year

4

Carrilyn Long is living her life’s purpose as an educator, administrator and a mentor.  She joined Walsh University in 2013 as an adjunct faculty member in the Division of Education and was appointed Director of Multicultural Affairs in 2018.  Prior to Walsh, she spent 20 years at Stark State College serving as a faculty member in Human and Social Services Education and retired as the Dean of Education and Human Services.  Earlier in her career, she was a Stark County Head Start Director.  Long has been very involved in the Stark County community throughout her career and has been recognized for her outstanding service and leadership.

Though she has held different roles in teaching, government and higher education, Long has always had a passion for working with people from underrepresented populations.  At Walsh, she works collaboratively with colleagues to develop programs and activities aimed at student development and retention, she helps students make connections with community organizations, and she’s a source of inspiration and support for all students.

“God calls us all to a purpose, and I know my purpose is to be here in this position and do what I’ve been doing,” Long said.  “I care about people, and I know if our students, especially underrepresented populations, don’t have a degree, it’s so hard to move up.  It’s so important to get the knowledge and the degree.  At Walsh, I’m able to share my journey with the students and get them actively involved in the community.  It’s my goal to see them graduate.”

Long earned her bachelor’s degree in Family Relations and Human Development from The Ohio State University, her master’s in Social Service Administration from Case Western Reserve University and is on track to complete her doctorate in administrator leadership for teaching at Walden University this summer.
