Guy-Sheftall Keynotes Women’s History Month

Kent State University recently issued the following announcement.

To celebrate Women’s History Month and to honor Black History Month, Kent State University’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in collaboration with Black United 

Students and the Department of Africana Studies, invites you to attend a virtual conversation with Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Ph.D., esteemed author, founding director of the Women’s 

Research and Resource Center and Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women’s Studies at Spelman College. The virtual event will take place at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.

Guy-Sheftall has been involved with the national women’s studies movement since its inception. She provided leadership for the establishment of the first women’s studies major at 

a historically Black college. In addition to her roles at Spelman College, she is an adjunct professor at Emory University’s Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, 

where she teaches graduate courses in their doctoral program.

Guy-Sheftall has published several texts within African American and women’s studies that includes the first anthology on Black women’s literature, “Sturdy Black Bridges: Visions 

of Black Women in Literature.” In 1983, she became founding editor of Sage: A Scholarly Journal on Black Women, which was devoted exclusively to the experiences of women of 

African descent and published from 1983-1996.

She is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including a National Kellogg Fellowship, a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies and Spelman’s 

Presidential Faculty Award for outstanding scholarship. Guy-Sheftall is a past president of the National Women’s Studies Association.
